Who needs to take the statsborgerprøven?

The statsborgerprøven (Norwegian citizenship test) applies to you if you're applying for Norwegian citizenship and haven't already met the requirement to show knowledge of Norwegian society in another way.

You don't need it if

• You've passed the samfunnskunnskapsprøven (social studies test) in Norwegian
• You've completed social studies training that meets the requirement under the regulations
• You're covered by an exemption, for example due to age or documented health conditions

You probably need it if

• You took the samfunnskunnskapsprøven in a language other than Norwegian
• You have a permanent residence permit and are about to apply for citizenship

The requirements around the test

The statsborgerprøven is just one of the requirements for citizenship. There are also requirements covering things like residence period, identity, conduct and Norwegian language skills. The test doesn't replace any of them.

Check which test you actually need before you register and pay the fee. Taking the wrong test is an expensive and completely unnecessary detour, and it happens more often than you'd think, because the names are similar and because one test sometimes covers the other.
