Which exam do you need?
Applying for permanent residence or citizenship? You may need to pass Samfunnskunnskapsprøven and/or Statsborgerprøven. Here’s the simple difference.
- Permanent residence: You must pass Samfunnskunnskapsprøven (Social Studies Test). It can be taken in multiple languages.
- Citizenship: If you did not take Samfunnskunnskapsprøven in Norwegian, you must take Statsborgerprøven (Citizenship Test). It is Norwegian only (bokmål or nynorsk).
- Do you need both? Usually not. If you pass Samfunnskunnskapsprøven in Norwegian, you typically don’t need Statsborgerprøven as well.

Usually not. Passing the Social Studies Test in Norwegian typically removes the need for the separate Citizenship Test.
How many questions are there and what is the pass mark?▾
The exams consist of multiple-choice questions. For the Citizenship Test (Statsborgerprøven), you need 24 out of 36 correct to pass. For the Social Studies Test (Samfunnskunnskapsprøven), you need 26 out of 38 correct to pass.
