Which Norwegian exam do you need?
Applying for permanent residence or citizenship? You may need to pass Samfunnskunnskapsprøven and/or Statsborgerprøven. Here’s the simple difference.
- Permanent residence: You must pass Samfunnskunnskapsprøven (Social Studies Test). It can be taken in multiple languages.
- Citizenship: If you did not take Samfunnskunnskapsprøven in Norwegian, you must take Statsborgerprøven (Citizenship Test). It is Norwegian only (bokmål or nynorsk).
- Do you need both? Usually not. If you pass Samfunnskunnskapsprøven in Norwegian, you typically don’t need Statsborgerprøven as well.
