Applying for a permanent residence permit or citizenship? You need to pass Samfunnskunnskapsprøven (social studies test) and/or Statsborgerprøven (Norwegian citizenship test). Here’s a quick overview of what you need to know.
- Permanent residence permit: You need to pass Samfunnskunnskapsprøven. It's available in several languages.
- Citizenship: If you didn't take Samfunnskunnskapsprøven in Norwegian, you'll need to take Statsborgerprøven. It's only available in Norwegian (Bokmål or Nynorsk).
- Do you need to take both? Usually not. If you pass Samfunnskunnskapsprøven in Norwegian, you normally don't need Statsborgerprøven as well.

What is the Samfunnskunnskapsprøven?▾
An official 38-question multiple-choice exam about Norwegian society: laws, democracy, work, family, health and everyday life. You need it for permanent residence, and if you take it in Norwegian, it also counts towards citizenship.
Who has to take the Statsborgerprøven?▾
Anyone applying for Norwegian citizenship who has not already passed the Samfunnskunnskapsprøven in Norwegian. The Statsborgerprøven is taken in Norwegian.
Do I have to take both exams?▾
Usually not. Pass the Samfunnskunnskapsprøven in Norwegian and it normally covers both permanent residence and citizenship. Pass it in another language, and you will also need the Statsborgerprøven when you apply for citizenship.
How many questions are there, and how many do I need to pass?▾
Samfunnskunnskapsprøven: 38 questions in 60 minutes, of which 34 count, and you need 26 correct. Statsborgerprøven: 36 questions in 60 minutes, of which 32 count, and you need 24 correct. On both exams the remaining 4 are unscored trial questions. Prøveappen's mock exams use the same format, the same timing and the same pass marks.
Is the free exam a real mock exam?▾
Yes - and you get the whole exam, not a small sample. One complete mock exam free for each exam type: all 38 questions for the Samfunnskunnskapsprøven, all 36 for the Statsborgerprøven, with the real 60-minute timing and explanations for what you got wrong. No card details.
How does the pass guarantee work?▾
