What does samfunnskunnskapsprøven (social studies test) cost in your kommune (municipality)?
There is no national price. The kommune sets the fee itself, and the differences are big enough to be worth a couple of minutes' checking.
The numbers
We track exam dates and fees in 57 kommuner. Here's how the price breaks down:

The difference between the lowest and the highest is, then, more than double.
What this means for you
You're not tied to the kommune you live in. If you register where the exam is cheapest and practical to travel to, you can save several hundred kroner. If you're taking two exams, or you're unsure whether you'll pass on the first attempt, it quickly adds up to a real amount.
The fee is charged per attempt
If you fail, you pay again. That's the main reason not to register before you're ready. Taking a free practice exam first costs nothing; taking the real one too early costs you the fee all over again.
Why the prices vary so much
Because the fee is meant to cover the kommune's costs of running the exam, and those costs aren't the same everywhere. That's a story of its own.
