The National Population Register and moving

If you move within Norway, you must notify the National Population Register. It's a duty, and it has consequences far beyond paperwork.

Why your address matters so much

Because the kommune (municipality) is responsible for a great deal: your GP, school place, kindergarten, adult education, and the test centre where you sit the samfunnskunnskapsprøven (social studies test). Which kommune you're registered in decides who is responsible for you.

If your address is wrong, you'll get post sent to the wrong place, and services you're entitled to become harder to access.

The deadline

You must report a move shortly after you've moved. This is done online.

Moving abroad

This also needs to be reported. Remaining registered as resident in Norway when you're not can affect your tax and your residence case.

What this has to do with the test

Knowledge of public agencies and your own duties is part of the syllabus. This is one of the practical examples.
