BankID and MinID
Electronic ID is the key to almost everything official in Norway. Without it, you have to turn up in person for things that take two minutes online.
The most common ones
MinID is a simpler electronic ID, based on codes sent to you. It gives access to many public services.
BankID is stronger, and gives access to most things, including banking and signing documents. You get it through your bank.
The order people usually go in
Most people start with MinID, because it doesn't require a bank account, and get BankID once their banking is sorted.
What you use it for
Tax returns, online health services, applications, digital post from public authorities, and logging in to NAV. Digital post is worth noting: letters from public authorities are increasingly sent only digitally.
If you get stuck
Use your bank for BankID, and Skatteetaten or the kommune for help with everything else. These are questions they answer every day.
