A question on the samfunnskunnskapsprøven has three answer options, one of which is correct. No free text, no essays, no oral part. You get 38 of these, 34 of them count, and you need 26 correct answers.
What a question looks like
Who elects the representatives to the Storting?
- The King
- The residents, through elections every four years
- The municipal councils
Notice two things. The options are short, and the wrong options aren't silly. This isn't a test you can guess your way through by picking whatever sounds most official.
What this format does to your reading
When you only have three options, most questions come down to a choice between two you're unsure about. That means details decide: every four years, not every three. The kommune, not the state. NAV, not your GP.
Reading a whole chapter gives you the overview, but it's answering questions that teaches you the details, because that's where you discover you thought you knew something you didn't.
Where the questions come from
The questions aren't random. They follow the curriculum for social studies for adult immigrants, which has 25 competence goals spread across topics such as democracy, health, school, working life, equality, and law and justice. Each goal has its own weighting, so some topics produce more questions than others.
