Converting your driving licence to Norwegian

Whether your driving licence can be swapped for a Norwegian one depends on which country it was issued in, and the rules vary a lot between country groups.

Roughly speaking

EU and EEA. Your licence is usually valid in Norway, and swapping it is straightforward.

Some countries outside the EEA. Swapping is possible, often with a practical test required.

Other countries. You'll usually need to get a Norwegian licence the normal way.

The deadline is what catches people out

Your right to swap a foreign driving licence is time-limited from when you're registered as resident. If you let the deadline pass, you may lose the chance to swap it, and you're left needing full training instead.

This is the one thing to check early, not when you actually need the car.

Where to check

Statens vegvesen (the Norwegian Public Roads Administration) has the rules per country. They change, so it's worth checking there rather than in a forum.
