Dual citizenship in Norway

From 1 January 2020, Norway allows dual citizenship. You don't need to give up the citizenship you already have to become Norwegian.

That was a real change. Before 2020, the main rule was the opposite, and many people put off applying for years just to avoid having to choose.

The important nuance

Norway allows it. That doesn't mean your home country does.

Some countries automatically withdraw citizenship when you become a citizen of another country. Others require you to apply to keep it. Others still allow it without any extra steps.

It's the rules in the other country that decide, and Norway has no influence over them. If you want to know what applies, you need to check with that country's authorities, usually the embassy.

What this means for your application

You don't need to tell UDI that you want to keep your other citizenship. That's no longer something you apply for on the Norwegian side.

Why it's still worth checking

Because the consequences lie outside Norway: inheritance, property, entry to your home country, military service. These are things Norwegian rules can't help you with, and they're easier to sort out before you apply than afterwards.
