Which Norwegian exam do you need?
Norway requires you to pass either the Social Studies Test or the Citizenship Test depending on whether you are applying for permanent residence or citizenship. Understanding the difference helps you plan your study focus, language choice and documentation.
- Permanent residence: You must pass the Social Studies Test. It can be taken in multiple languages if you are not yet confident in Norwegian.
- Citizenship: If you did not take the Social Studies Test in Norwegian, you must pass the Citizenship Test. It is only offered in Norwegian (bokmål or nynorsk).
- Need both? It is enough to take the Social Studies Test in Norwegian once. It counts for both permanent residence and citizenship.
